Our Pastor
Pastor Kevin McDonald was born and raised on the great south side of Chicago in the Roseland area. He attended Harlan Community Academy for high school and Chicago State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 1994.
Pastor McDonald has been a member of the Second Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church all of his life. His mother, Barbara Jean McDonald served as Minister of Music for nearly thirty years, and his grandmother Bertha Lee Parker, was a faithful Mission member. Being baptized at a young age and being around church all the time, he has remained busy in the work of the church. He has served as drummer, Usher, Youth Choir member, Youth Worker, Audio/Visual assistant, Finance Committee member, Member of the Board of Directors and President of the Board of Directors. He had no idea the Lord was preparing Him to Serve while grooming him to Lead.
In 1999, Kevin decided to stop running from his calling to minister. Upon sharing the desire to proclaim the Gospel, his excited and loving Pastor, the Late Rev. Lee A. Davis scheduled his first sermon in January of 2000 and was licensed the same year. In 2002, he was ordained as a Baptist Minister, and was affectionately called “Rev. Kev”. He had no idea what the Lord had in store for him.
Pastor Davis quickly began to put Rev. McDonald to work, appointing him as the new Youth Pastor. In this capacity he was responsible for leading and teaching youth ages 13 and up. More opportunities to minister at church and other fellowships came, allowing him the chance to be exposed to groups large and small. He was doing what he was called to do…Preach the Word! He had no idea what the Lord had in store for him.
After the sudden transition of SMV’s Assistant Pastor, Rev. James Green in July of 2013, Rev. McDonald was appointed as the new Assistant Pastor in August of 2013. As the years progressed he continued to serve the congregation and his Pastor, Rev. Davis until the Lord called Pastor Davis from labor to reward in May of 2016. In August of 2016, Rev. McDonald was elected as the 4th Pastor of Second Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. He had no idea what the Lord had in store for him.
In addition to his job as a Pastor, he is the husband to his loving and supportive wife Kim, and father to his fantastic children, his daughter Taylor, and his son Trenton. He has been employed with the City of Chicago since 1995 and has served in many capacities including Investigator, Manager of Investigations, and currently as a Special Assistant.
Pastor McDonald’s favorite scripture is 1 Corinthians 4:2 “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.”
